Huge boost for city centre as Babcock office deal is confirmed

Defence Company Babcock International Group has confirmed that it will take over the House of Fraser building in Plymouth City Centre and convert it into an iconic office block for 2,000 workers.

The company says the decision will significantly increase city centre footfall and support local businesses and services.

Harry Holt, Deputy CEO of Babcock said: “Securing a location for our new off site facility is a significant milestone. The move reinforces our commitment to Team Plymouth, supporting sustainable prosperity by creating high quality jobs, strengthening Plymouth’s economy and accelerating regeneration in the city centre.”

Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “We are delighted with this news which secures the future of one of Plymouth’s most iconic buildings and will provide a huge economic boost for our city centre and businesses. It’s a huge vote of confidence in the city centre and a signal of intent to other investors.

“It won’t be long before other businesses move in and help us and our partners to make use of some of our empty buildings. It proves what we have been saying for some time, that Plymouth City Centre is on the up.”

The news follows other major investments, including:

  • Significant funding from Homes England to facilitate the building of thousands of new homes in the city centre

  • NHS investment in the West End with the creation of two community diagnostic centres

  • The completion this summer of the £30m improvements to Armada Way
